Cancer cells often form a lump or tumor seen on imaging or felt as a mass. It occurs mostly in women, but men can also develop it.

Common types include ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and invasive carcinoma. Other types, such as phyllodes tumors and angiosarcoma, are less common.
After a biopsy, breast cancer cells are checked for estrogen, progesterone, and HER2 receptors, and for tumor grade. These findings guide treatment options.
Surgical procedures:
Mastectomy removes a breast to treat or prevent cancer; preventive surgery is reserved for high-risk patients. Main types include:
- - Total mastectomy: removal of breast tissue and nipple.
- - Modified radical mastectomy: removal of the breast, most axillary lymph nodes, and often the lining over chest muscles.
- - Lumpectomy: removal of the tumor and a margin of healthy tissue.
