Every body is different. What causes vaginitis for some people is not a problem for others. Anything that disrupts the natural balance of your vagina can trigger vaginitis. Here are ways to keep your vulva and vagina healthy:

  • - Keep the genital area clean and dry.
  • - Consider probiotics during antibiotic treatments.
  • - Avoid scented intimate hygiene products.
  • - Skip extremely tight pants.
  • - Wear cotton underwear.
  • - If you have diabetes, maintain good glucose control.
  • - Use condoms.

Hygiene, pH, hair removal, sexual life, diet, clothing, menstruation, and habits all matter for vaginal health. Keep the vaginal area clean inside and out. A few tips:

  • - Use specific cleansers (not the same gel or soap as the rest of the body).
  • - Clean from front to back.
  • - Wash only the external area.
  • - Avoid vaginal douching.
  • - Do not use a sponge to wash the intimate area.
  • - Avoid intimate deodorants.
  • - Wear cotton underwear.

Knowing your family history and discussing it with your doctor is the first step to understanding your chances of developing cancer. You may benefit from counseling and genetic testing to learn whether you carry mutations that affect your risk.
